The municipal pool and lido of Budapest's Kőbánya district, built in 1989 for the Újhegy housing estate and fully rebuilt by 2020: two indoor pools and two saunas year-round, with a summer strand of two outdoor pools alongside.
About
The Újhegyi Uszoda és Strandfürdő is the swimming and bathing facility of Budapest's tenth district, Kőbánya, at Újhegyi út 13. It was completed in 1989 as a covered pool for the district and for the Újhegy housing estate, built through a district-wide joint effort, and at first served mainly to give local schools somewhere to teach swimming. Over the following three decades it became the training base for a range of pool sports — swimming, synchronised swimming, water polo, baby swimming and aqua gymnastics — and it was later extended with an open-air section, turning a school teaching pool into the neighbourhood's general bathing and leisure facility. The district council paid for a complete refurbishment, finished in 2020.
The operator publishes the dimensions of all four pools. Indoors there is a 25-metre by 16-metre swimming pool two metres deep, held at 26 to 28 °C, and a 16-metre by 4.5-metre learner pool 80 centimetres deep and noticeably warmer at 30 to 32 °C. Outdoors the strand has a 25-metre by 8.5-metre bathing pool 1.35 metres deep and a five-by-five-metre toddler paddling pool 40 centimetres deep, both given as 26 to 32 °C. Two saunas complete the indoor offer, and since December 2025 massage has been available at the pool as well.
The indoor pool runs all year except for the compulsory maintenance shutdowns, opening at 6:00 on weekdays and closing at 20:00, with 8:00 to 19:00 hours at the weekend; the outdoor pool is a summer-only affair, open daily from 9:00 to 19:00. Tickets are timed rather than open-ended: the standard adult ticket buys three hours in the pool with sauna use included, a locker watch carries a 2,000 Ft cash deposit, and overstaying costs a surcharge for each hour begun. The strand is priced separately by the day, with a cheaper after-16:00 rate, family tickets, and occasional night bathing sessions from 20:00 to midnight. Children under three enter free on both sides. The site is run by the Kocsis Sándor Sportközpont, the district's sports centre, which also manages the Bihari úti and Ihász utcai sports grounds, and it is reached by the 68, 85, 117, 185 and 202E buses.
