Pünkösdfürdői strandfürdő

The Pünkösdfürdői Strandfürdő is an open-air summer bath at Királyok útja 272 in the Óbuda-Békásmegyer district of Budapest, on the Danube bank in the north of the city, operated by Budapest Gyógyfürdői és Hévizei Zrt., the municipal spa company. Its name records its origin: a deep well was begun on the riverside site in the spring of 1934 and delivered lukewarm spring water on Whitsunday, pünkösd in Hungarian, and the bath that followed took the name Whitsun Bath. The lido itself was built in 1935 to designs by Alfréd Hajós, the Olympic swimming champion turned architect who designed several Budapest baths, and passed to the Municipal Medicinal Baths and Springs Company on 10 May 1950. It was refurbished in 2002 and 2003, when every pool was fitted with filtration and circulation plant and an adventure pool, a children's pool with a slide and a Finnish sauna for twenty-five people were added.

Water supply comes from a well 556 metres deep in the north-west corner of the site, drawing from Upper Triassic dolomite and Lower Eocene calcareous sandstone. The operator describes the yield as a calcium-magnesium-hydrogen-carbonate lukewarm karst water and groups it with the northern Budapest springs - the Bründl spring, the Csillaghegy and Római fürdő spring groups and the Óbuda Árpád spring - whose waters it classes by chemical composition as simple thermal waters, poor in dissolved substances and gases, with total dissolved mineral content below one gram per litre, and lukewarm by temperature. The water is not classified as medicinal water. The bath states plainly that the pools are unheated, that natural processes largely determine water temperatures and that these can change within a single day, so the current figures are posted on a board beside the ticket office and updated hourly.

There are three pools set among rose arbours. The swimming pool is 50 metres long with a gradually deepening floor between 1.4 and 2.0 metres, usable both for lap swimming and for cooling off, and is given a temperature of 24 degrees. The adventure pool is 1.2 to 1.4 metres deep and is fitted with a neck shower and a current channel. The children's pool is 0.2 to 0.5 metres deep with a slide, a neck shower and a water mushroom, shaded against direct sun, and adults are not permitted to bathe in it. A single dry sauna, panelled in pine, runs at 80 to 100 degrees with 20 to 30 per cent humidity. The grounds are planted with mature trees and the bath also offers sports and rest areas and summer camps for children.

The bath is a summer operation. Published hours are 09:00 to 19:00 every day of the week, but the site's status indicator reads closed at the time of this survey and the home page's season notice still carries a closing date of 31 August 2025, so the exact end of the 2026 season is not stated. Anyone planning a visit outside high summer should confirm with the operator.
