Gellért Gyógyfürdő

Gellért Gyógyfürdő (Gellért Thermal Bath) is a medicinal thermal bath in Budapest, Hungary, set at the foot of Gellért Hill on the Buda side of the Danube and built directly alongside the Hotel Gellért. It is one of the city's landmark spa complexes, known for its Art Nouveau (Szecesszió) architecture and for water drawn from the springs inside Gellért Hill. Its water is officially certified as medicinal.

The water

The bath is supplied by thermal springs rising within Gellért Hill, with source temperatures reported across a range of roughly 27 to 48 degrees Celsius. The water is mineral-rich, containing calcium, magnesium, hydrogen carbonate, sulphate, chloride and sodium, together with fluoride. On the strength of this composition it holds certified medicinal-water status.

Medical indications

The medicinal water is used in the treatment of degenerative joint disease and chronic and subacute joint inflammation, spinal and intervertebral disc complaints, and neuralgia, as well as circulatory disorders. The bath also has an inhalatorium, used to ease asthma and other chronic bronchial conditions.

Pools & saunas

The complex combines an indoor swimming hall with separate thermal sitting pools kept at differing temperatures, so bathers can move between cooler and warmer water. There is an outdoor bathing area, and the site offers sauna and steam-bath facilities as part of its wellness provision.

History & architecture

The present bath was constructed in the years 1912 to 1918 and opened in 1918. It is built in the Art Nouveau style, with ornamental tilework, columns and glass-roofed interiors that are among its most recognisable features. Bathing at the site itself long predates the modern building.

Visiting

The bath is currently closed for a major renovation. According to the operator's public notice, it closed on 1 October 2025 and is planned to reopen in 2028, with the works addressing the ageing structure while preserving its historic Art Nouveau detailing. During the closure the operator directs visitors to the Széchenyi Thermal Bath as an alternative.
