About

Dandár Gyógyfürdő, in Budapest's ninth district, is one of the houses of Budapest Gyógyfürdői és Hévizei Zrt. It was the first bath built under the capital's 1928 decision to provide cheap public washing baths, put up between the summer of 1929 and May 1930 in art déco. At first the medicinal water was brought in by tanker from the deep well that supplies the Széchenyi bath; the 1978 refurbishment gave the house its own supply from a well sunk for the purpose in nearby Közraktár utca, and Hungarian reference works put its quality close to that of the Gellért bath.

The operator classifies the water as a hévíz — a thermal water — containing sodium, rich in dissolved calcium-magnesium hydrogencarbonate, carrying sulphate and chloride and with a significant fluoride content, and it holds the national certified gyógyvíz designation. For the medicinal pool bath, a twenty-minute procedure, the site lists degenerative joint disease, chronic and subacute joint inflammation, herniated disc, neuralgia and calcium-deficient states of the skeleton.

The thermal section, open all year, holds two medicinal pools at 35 and 38 °C, a Finnish sauna and a cold plunge pool; two experience pools at 36 and 38 °C lie beside a grass sunbathing lawn in use from spring to autumn, and a small sauna world adds an eight-person Finnish sauna and an aroma steam cabin. No stay or prescription is needed: a thermal ticket, a complex ticket covering the sauna world and the outdoor pools, weekday short tickets and reduced student and pensioner rates are sold at the door and online. Open 09:00–19:00 and to 22:00 on Thursday, when the experience elements still close at 19:00; nobody under 14 is admitted.
