Termas do Carvalhal

Termas do Carvalhal is a thermal spa set at around 500 m altitude in Castro Daire, nestled between the Montemuro and Arada mountain ranges in Portugal's Beira Alta (Viseu district). It operates year-round, from 1 January to 31 December.

Thermal water & source

The mineral water rises from a seismic-tectonic fault and is captured from a borehole roughly 600 m deep, emerging at about 60°C (measured up to 62°C at the spring). It is classified as sulphurous, bicarbonate, sodium and fluoride-rich, weakly mineralised, with a pH of 9.3. The water is indicated for rheumatic and musculoskeletal, respiratory, skin and digestive conditions.

Pools & balneotherapy

An outdoor thermal pool holds water at about 30°C (open seasonally, closing during the rainy months). The modern bathing facility offers a full range of hydrotherapy:

• Simple immersion baths and aerohydrotherapy (air-bubble emulsion)
• Computerised hydromassage, underwater shower and jet shower (including the alternating hot/cold Scottish technique)
• Vichy massage shower
• Spinal steam cabinet and vapour treatments for the extremities
• ORL treatments: nasal irrigation, aerosol inhalation and nebulisation

Spa & wellness

Wellness packages of 1 to 3 days combine general, facial and localised massage with computerised hydromassage and Vichy massage. Aromatherapy using 100% pure essential oils is also offered.

The spa sits amid scenic granite mountain landscapes; accommodation is available in the surrounding Castro Daire area.
