Termas de São Pedro do Sul

The Termas de São Pedro do Sul are Portugal's oldest and most-visited thermal spa, set beside the Vouga river about 3 km from the town of São Pedro do Sul and roughly 22 km from Viseu, in the green foothills of the Beira Alta. For more than two thousand years its mineral-medicinal waters have drawn people in search of relief and rest.

Sulphurous thermal water

The spa is built around a natural sulphurous spring whose water rises to the surface at 68.7 °C. Weakly mineralised, alkaline (pH around 8.9) and rich in sulphur compounds, this hyperthermal water is the protagonist of every treatment. It is prized for its action on rheumatic, musculoskeletal and respiratory conditions and for physical rehabilitation.

Roman heritage

Romans exploited the spring in the 1st century AD and raised a Balneum here that survives as a classified National Monument. Later, King Dom Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal, ordered a bathing facility built over the ancient ruins, and Queen Dona Amélia lent her name to the 19th-century balneário. The site remains one of the great landmarks of Portuguese thermalism.

Two thermal complexes

• Balneário Dom Afonso Henriques — a three-floor building renovated in 2007 that concentrates therapeutic thermalism, physiotherapy and the centralised medical services.
• Balneário Rainha Dona Amélia — the classical building, established in 1894, offering therapeutic thermalism together with thermal wellness through the AQVA Institute.

Balneotherapy & treatments

Equipped with modern technology and experienced staff, the balneários provide a full range of hydrotherapy: individual immersion baths, partial vapour treatments, needle and jet showers, hydromassage and collective inhalation therapies, prescribed for rheumatic, respiratory and rehabilitative programmes.

Spa & wellness

The AQVA Institute within the Balneário Rainha Dona Amélia is dedicated to thermal wellbeing, offering a Wellness Thermal Circuit and short relaxation programmes designed as a first contact with the spa. A dedicated AQVA line of dermocosmetics — creams, oils and soaps formulated with the thermal water — extends the experience beyond the baths.

Setting

The thermal resort blends its historic buildings with riverside parkland, a museum nucleus and cultural venues, making it a year-round destination for both health-focused thermalism and leisure.
