Hungarospa Hajdúszoboszló

Water parkHajdúszoboszló, Észak-Alföld, Hungary

A year-round spa complex in Hajdúszoboszló built on iodine-, bromine- and salt-bearing medicinal water struck in 1925, combining a certified medicinal bath, the indoor Aqua-Palace leisure bath, a seasonal open-air strand and a slide park.

About

The water behind Hungarospa was found by accident. The operator's history page dates the strike to 26 October 1925: Szénhidrogén kutatások nyomán 1091 méter mélységből földgáz társaságában felszinre tört a különleges, 73 fokos víz — during hydrocarbon prospecting, water of 73 °C rose from a depth of 1,091 metres in the company of natural gas. The town decided to build a bath on it, and the site records that the sand bath opened on 26 July 1927. The operator characterises the water as iodine-, bromine- and sodium-chloride-bearing and states that it is applied primarily to rheumatic disease; it also names surgical, neurological and dermatological conditions including eczema and psoriasis, post-operative orthopaedic aftercare, and states that oestrogen bound to bitumen is present in the water. No numerical analysis (total dissolved solids or individual ion concentrations) is published on the site, so none is given here. The site notes that bathing in the medicinal water and sauna use are not recommended below the age of 14.

The complex is divided into separately ticketed units. The Gyógyfürdő (medicinal bath) is open all year; the operator writes that alongside the three medicinal pools in the hall there are four open medicinal pools, and that all of them run on a fill-and-empty system year-round. The two operator pages differ on the indoor temperatures: the Gyógyfürdő text names three covered pools of 32, 36 and 38 °C, while the pool-status table on the same page gives ranges of 32-34, 34-36 and 36-38 °C; both figures are reproduced here rather than one being chosen. Guests may pass freely between the Gyógyfürdő and the Strandfürdő on one ticket. On the ground floor are three consulting rooms, a physiotherapy hall and tangentor rooms; along the corridor are a sauna, weight bath, mud packing and tub baths, with massage rooms and electrotherapy upstairs. The therapy department states that more than forty kinds of treatment are available, among them massage, mud treatment, weight bath, underwater massage, underwater therapeutic gymnastics, electrotherapy and soft laser; treatments subsidised by Hungarian health insurance are delivered under medical supervision, and the site lists contraindications.

The Aqua-Palace indoor leisure bath, handed over in March 2010, covers 15,000 m² and holds 15 pools, of which eight are in the ground-floor bathing world: tropical (32-34 °C), ice-cave (25-27 °C), cinema thermal (34-36 °C), Pávai thermal (34-36 °C), Ganges (32-34 °C), Roman (32-34 °C), sea (32-34 °C) and cave (34-36 °C), with jet massages, a current channel and bubble beds, a family slide and a giant spiral slide, plus a sauna world, fitness and a 180-seat conference room. The seasonal Strandfürdő occupies a landscaped 30-hectare site open from 1 May to 30 September with 15 pools, among them wave, swimming, bubble and children's pools and a sand-fringed 'Mediterranean seashore'. The Aquapark, which the operator calls Hungary's first slide park, was built in 2000 with six giant slides from a 12-metre tower, gained three more in 2002 and an extreme zone of six adventure slides on 15- and 20-metre towers in 2014; the operator states it now has 15 giant slides and 8 children's slides, alongside a current river, a leisure pool (24-26 °C), a medicinal-water pool (36-38 °C) and children's adventure pools (28-30 °C). Slides are restricted to guests over 120 cm, and the Aquapark is a supplement to the Strand ticket. The outdoor Prémium Zóna wellness area opened in summer 2021.
