About

Bogácsi Gyógy- és Strandfürdő is a thermal and open-air bath in Bogács, in the Bükk foothills of northern Hungary. It combines certified medicinal thermal pools with recreational and children's pools, a sauna area, wellness and massage services, and a dedicated medical treatment department, and it is set within a larger resort that also offers several kinds of on-site accommodation.

The water

The bath draws on medicinal thermal water that the site classifies as calcium-magnesium hydrogen-carbonate in type, with sulphur as its principal active component. The published analysis lists calcium at 83 mg, magnesium at 24 mg, sodium at 33 mg, hydrogen carbonate at 433 mg, sulphide at 4 mg and free carbon dioxide at 173 mg. According to the site the water is used for rheumatic, joint and movement disorders, recovery after fractures, gynaecological complaints, prostate conditions, bile and liver problems, chronic gastritis and constipation, respiratory inflammation, osteoporosis and several skin conditions including psoriasis and chronic eczema. The site also sets out contraindications, among them recent cardiac infarction, hypertension, fever, tuberculosis, pregnancy and epilepsy.

Pools

The site describes twelve pools in total, eleven on the main grounds and one at the resort's yurt centre. The large medicinal pool measures 27 by 13 metres at 35 to 37 degrees, and a pair of twin outdoor thermal pools of 15 by 15 metres are held at 35 and 37 degrees. Further thermal water is offered in a covered indoor pool at 34 to 36 degrees and in the outdoor butterfly-shaped pool at 35 to 37 degrees. For swimmers there is an outdoor swimming and beach pool of 22.5 by 33.3 metres at 24 to 26 degrees, while indoors a 253-square-metre experience pool runs at 30 to 34 degrees. Children have a water playground, a ball-themed pool, and shallow paddling pools with temperatures around 31 to 34 degrees. A separate pool serves the yurt resort.

Saunas and wellness

The sauna world holds five cabins: two Finnish saunas (one at 80 to 90 degrees seating six, one at 90 to 95 degrees seating four), a bio-sauna at 50 to 60 degrees, an infrared sauna at around 60 degrees, and a steam cabin for six. The area is fitted with sixteen loungers, a filtered drinking-water dispenser, an ice maker and a separate television area. Alongside the saunas, the bath runs a massage service offering refreshing and relaxing massages as well as beauty and body treatments.

Medical treatments

A medical department offers a range of therapies, including medical remedial massage, Hévíz mud treatment, underwater jet massage, underwater group therapeutic exercise, several forms of electrotherapy (interference, diadynamic, iontophoresis, TENS, selective stimulation current and galvanic treatments), ultrasound therapy, Biotron lamp, anti-rheumatic packs, acupuncture, a solarium and an infrared foot-radiation sauna. The site states that many treatments are supported by the national health fund and can be accessed on a doctor's referral for a nominal fee. A medically supervised fasting cure is also offered.
