About

Barcsi Gyógyfürdő és Rekreációs Központ is a certified medicinal thermal bath and recreation centre in Barcs, in south-western Hungary. It combines outdoor and indoor pools for swimming and bathing with thermal and therapeutic pools, a sauna area and a medical treatment department served by its own mineral-rich thermal water.

The water

The bath is supplied by thermal water that rises from a depth of 1,317 metres at a temperature of 55 °C. The site describes it as a sodium-hydrogen-carbonate type water that is rich in minerals. It is used in the bath's thermal and therapeutic pools and is officially recognised as medicinal water.

Pools & saunas

The complex operates six pools across outdoor and indoor areas. Outdoors there is a 25 x 16 m swimming pool that is 2.2 m deep and kept at 26 °C, a children's pool at 30 °C with a water slide and bubble features, a thermal pool at 36 °C fitted with armrests, a neck shower and air jets, and an experience pool reachable through a covered corridor in cold weather. Indoors there is a second 25 x 16 m swimming pool at 26 °C with spectator seating and a teaching pool of 0.8-1.2 m depth kept at 32 °C for instruction and therapy. Three further therapeutic pools are heated year round to 34 °C, 38 °C and 40 °C, and a 36 °C pool is equipped with a Hungarian-made patient lift for guests with restricted mobility.

The sauna area includes three Finnish sauna cabins at 90-95 °C with plunge pools, an infrared sauna cabin at 45 °C, a steam room at 50 °C, a cold chamber at 5 °C described as having pain- and inflammation-reducing effects, and a Kneipp footbath with stone and cold-water immersion.

Treatments & wellness

The medical treatment department, which began operating in early 2006, offers physiotherapy on land and in water, therapeutic and refreshing massage, underwater jet massage (tangentor), mud treatment (parafango), hydrotherapy, therapeutic swimming and electrotherapy for rheumatic and muscle conditions, including ultrasound, magnetotherapy, galvanic and interferential currents. The water and treatments are recommended for cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension, arterial narrowing and recovery after cardiac surgery, for musculoskeletal complaints including osteoporosis, for rheumatological conditions handled through specialist consultations, and for rehabilitation after accidents.

Facilities

Beyond the pools and saunas, the centre provides outdoor sports and recreation, including a foot-tennis court and a beach volleyball court available from June to September, and a playground with wooden equipment built to European standards.
