A forest bath in Velbert-Langenberg where every indoor basin is filled with Luisenhall natural brine, paired since summer 2026 with a new biologically filtered natural open-air pool that opens or closes with the weather.

About

The Nizzabad stands in the woods above Velbert-Langenberg and is one of three baths run by Stadtwerke Velbert. Its distinguishing feature is the water: the operator states that Luisenhall natural brine fills all of the indoor swimming basins, which sets it apart from an ordinary municipal indoor pool. The indoor hall holds a sports basin with a full diving installation — springboards at one and three metres and a platform at five — alongside a teaching basin and a small-children's area with its own attractions. Water is held at 28 °C in the sports basin and at 30 °C in the teaching basin and for baby swimming. A pool lifter and step-free changing rooms make the building accessible, and there is a massage station and a snack machine on site.

Since the summer of 2026 the Nizzabad has had a second half. Velbert's town council approved the construction of a natural open-air pool on 9 April 2024, the Stadtwerke built it, and the plant was finished at the end of 2025 in time for bathing to start with the 2026 summer season; a large share of the cost came from a federal programme for renovating municipal sport, youth and cultural facilities. The outdoor bath has a broad beach area with an extensive sun deck, water slides, a separate area for toddlers, a beach volleyball court and a kiosk serving hot food, and it was laid out barrier-free with its own step-free entrance.

Because the outdoor water is treated biologically rather than chemically, admission to the Naturfreibad is capped at 1,100 people at a time, and the operator warns that clouding or any other drop in water quality can force a short-notice closure or an entry stop. The two halves alternate with the weather rather than running together: in good weather the natural open-air pool is open and the indoor hall is closed, and in bad weather it is the other way round. Adult-only swimming in the indoor hall begins at 13:00. Two 22 kW charging points for electric cars sit at the bath, parking is free, and tickets can be booked online in advance.
