Claudius Therme

Claudius Therme is a thermal bath in Cologne, set in the Rheinpark on the right bank of the Rhine, with a view across the river to the cathedral. Three pools connect the indoor hall to the garden, and the water carries an official medicinal certification.

The water

The venue describes a natural thermal spring whose water has spent some 39,000 years filtering through limestone and dolomite, arriving naturally carbonated, rich in minerals and notably high in iron. Analyses are carried out by Institut Fresenius, and the venue states the water is as effective as that of recognised spa towns. According to the venue it is used for rheumatic complaints, joint and disc disease, blood pressure and circulatory disorders, and stress-related conditions.

Pools

The sitting pool is filled with unmodified thermal water at 35 °C, which gives it a reddish cast from the iron. A hot-cold grotto pairs a warm section at 35 °C with a cold plunge, and a current channel runs through the outdoor area. A separate floating basin holds a 15% brine enriched with Dead Sea salt; without a sauna ticket, use is limited to 30 minutes.

Programme

Water aerobics runs four times a day on weekdays — at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30 and 14:30, ten minutes each — and an Aquafit prevention course of ten 45-minute sessions is offered for 180 EUR. Music plays underwater in the pools.

Visiting
