Historic hilltop thermal baths above Spa, the town that named the word, fed by naturally iron-rich carbonated mineral springs and reached by funicular.
About
Perched on the Colline d'Annette et Lubin above the town of Spa in Belgium's Liege province, Les Thermes de Spa carries on a bathing tradition rooted in the very place that gave the word "spa" to the world. The town's iron-rich mineral springs have drawn visitors for centuries, and in 2021 Spa was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Great Spa Towns of Europe." The modern thermal complex has welcomed bathers on this site since 1868.
The mineral and thermal waters
The baths and treatments are fed by Spa's own natural mineral waters. The pools draw on the Clementine spring, while the celebrated carbonic (carbo-gaseous) baths use water from the Marie-Henriette spring - the oldest of Spa's waters, roughly four centuries old - a naturally ferruginous (iron-bearing) and carbonated water that sparkles gently at the surface.
Springs and "pouhons"
Spa's cold and lukewarm mineral springs are known locally as pouhons. These iron-rich waters can still be tasted at several drinking halls in the town below, the most famous being the Pouhon Pierre-le-Grand, while the Thermes gently warm the mineral water for comfortable bathing.
Indoor and outdoor baths
The complex offers around 800 m2 of indoor and outdoor thermal baths, kept at about 33 degrees Celsius and fitted with more than a hundred hydromassage jets. The distinctive carbonic copper baths deliver microbubbles of carbon dioxide at around 36 degrees Celsius in individual copper bathtubs, drawing on the Marie-Henriette spring.
- Indoor and outdoor thermal pools with hydromassage nozzles
- Carbonic copper baths (carbo-gaseous / "bains carbo-gazeux")
- Traditional balneotherapy care, including peat baths
Sauna, hammam and wellness
Beyond the pools, guests can move between saunas, hammams and relaxation areas, arranged as both textile (swimwear) spaces and a separate naturist zone. A full wellness and treatment menu includes facial care, body massages, endermology (LPG Cellu M6) slimming and firming, scar treatment, angiotherapy and weight-management programmes.
Hilltop setting and the funicular
The Thermes sit on a hilltop above the town centre, and a short funicular links the town below directly to the baths, sparing visitors the climb and delivering them straight to the modern spa on the summit.
