Bad zum Raben

Bad zum Raben is a thermal bath in the historic spring town of Baden, Aargau, fed by the town's natural thermal water. First mentioned in 1299 as a bathing inn and later known as the Hotel Schweizerhof, the property has one of the longest bathing histories in the town. Since 2022 it has been owned by a non-profit cooperative (Genossenschaft Bad zum Raben) with around 900 members, whose aim is to develop it into a thermal bath accessible to all.

Thermal water and pools

The bath is supplied with natural thermal water. Under the planned renovation it is to have four pools at different temperatures, including a recently uncovered original pool from the Belle-Epoque era and a cold pool. Baden's thermal water pools are typically around 37 to 43 degrees Celsius. The project is developing what it describes as Switzerland's first thermal-water treatment without chemical additives, and waste heat from the thermal water is to be used to produce shower water.

Revitalisation project

The former hotel baths have been carefully revitalised since 2018 and were used temporarily as exhibition and art baths. The regular temporary use ended on 25 January 2025 and the bath is currently closed for renovation, though individual events with bathing continue to take place. The planned renovation, budgeted at 4.5 million Swiss francs, adds a small bistro, a small stage for cultural events, rooms for art and relaxation, and a bath media library. The ceremonial reopening of the renovated bath is planned for 2027.
