About
Kúpele Sklené Teplice is a balneological thermal spa in the village of Sklené Teplice in the Banská Štiavnica district of central Slovakia, operated by the company Liečebné termálne kúpele, a.s. The database name "Banský kúpeľ" belongs to one of the indoor baths on the site rather than to the establishment as a whole. The operator states that seven springs rise at Sklené Teplice with temperatures from 37 °C to 52.3 °C, that artificial deep bores and wells reaching 1600 m are also used, and that these are the most significant springs of the volcanic belt. The water is described as rich in minerals, and the operator says the pools are supplied daily with water directly from the springs.
The best known bath is the Jaskynný parný kúpeľ "Parenica", a steam bath in a naturally formed cave that the operator calls a European rarity; the water there comes straight from the thermal spring, is only slightly cooled, and is quoted at 42 °C, with a maximum stay of 20 minutes followed by a 20-minute dry wrap in a rest room. Because of the heat and humidity the operator does not recommend it for children under 12 or for guests with cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure. Alongside it the site lists Kúpeľ Márie Terézie, a bath in antique style with two different water temperatures; Banský kúpeľ, whose ceiling carries a replica of Botticelli's Birth of Venus; a wellness sauna world with several sauna types, a tepidarium and an ice fall; a peat bath; a salt cave; and the Relax Thermal pool.
A separate open-air thermal lido operates in the summer season only. Its pool list gives a children's pool at 32 °C, a 25 m swimming pool at 28 °C and a seated pool at 39 °C, set in a planted, shaded area with a small children's playground. At the time of reading the site stated that the summer season of the thermal lido had ended, while the indoor baths kept year-round hours: Kúpeľ Márie Terézie 08:00-17:00 Monday to Thursday, 08:00-18:00 Friday and Saturday and 09:00-17:00 on Sunday; Banský kúpeľ 13:00-18:00 on weekdays and 10:00-18:00 at weekends; the Relax Thermal pool 09:00-17:00 Monday to Saturday and 09:00-15:00 on Sunday; and the spa reception 07:00-19:00 daily. The wellness sauna world in Relax Thermal is listed for Saturdays only, 15:00-18:00, with entry valid for 120 minutes. The restaurant U Borna is marked temporarily closed.
The operator's history page reports that the baths are first mentioned in written sources in 1550, although the healing power of the springs was known earlier; the same page carries an internal inconsistency, heading one entry 1886 while the text under it says the baths were bought by the mason Jozef Gasparetz in 1866. The Gasparetz family held the baths until they were expropriated under the Beneš decrees. Today the spa treats patients with disorders of the locomotor and nervous systems and also serves commercial hotel guests. Admission prices are published only as a downloadable procedure price list, so no figures are quoted here.
