Termas das Caldas de Aregos

The Termas de Caldas de Aregos are set on the banks of the Douro River in Resende, and their waters have been sought for their healing value since the 12th century, when Queen Mafalda is said to have founded an inn on the site around 1102.

Thermal water & source

The spring emerges hot from the ground and is classified as sulphurous, alkaline-fluorinated, hypothermal and hyposalinated water with nitrogen content. It surfaces at about 60°C at the Ribeiro spring and 54°C at the Albergaria tank, carrying hydrogen sulphide together with silica, sulphates, alkaline chlorides and calcareous and magnesium salts. The excellence of the waters was confirmed by chemical analysis carried out by Charles Lepierre in 1924.

Pools & balneotherapy

The Rainha D. Mafalda bathhouse provides thermal medicine and balneotherapy under the supervision of the Directorate-General of Health. The waters are indicated for:

Spa & wellness

Alongside the essential and complementary thermal treatments, the centre offers wellness and rehabilitation facilities including a gym, a pool and a Turkish bath, as well as a centre for rehabilitation and athletic performance.

Douro setting

The baths sit within the Douro landscape at Caldas de Aregos, close to the river's fluvial quay, in a setting long celebrated by writers such as Agustina Bessa-Luís and Miguel Torga.
