Tropical Islands
Europe's largest tropical resort, under a former airship hangar an hour south of Berlin, held at 26 °C the year round.
About
Tropical Islands stands at Krausnick in Brandenburg, some 60 km south of Berlin, inside a hall built to hold airships. The hangar was raised for the freight-airship company CargoLifter, which went insolvent in 2002; the resort opened in the building on 19 December 2004. The hall measures 360 metres long, 210 metres wide and 107 metres high, which is enough for the rainforest, the beach and the slide tower to stand under one roof with nothing between them.
The air inside is held at about 26 °C and the humidity near 64 per cent all year, so a visit in January is the same as one in July. The Tropical Sea is a 140-metre pool covering 4,400 m² with a sand beach along one side; the Bali Lagoon adds a further 1,200 m² of warmer water. Outside the hall, the Amazonia area covers more than 35,000 m² of open-air pools, slides and lawns in the warm months.
The resort is open 365 days a year and around the clock for guests staying overnight, who sleep in tents and lodges inside the dome. Between 22:00 and 08:00 one of the two indoor pools stays partly open while the other is cleaned, so the water is never entirely shut. Day visitors follow the attraction hours, which the operator publishes date by date. Tropical Islands has belonged to the Spanish leisure group Parques Reunidos since December 2018.
