About

Copa Ca Backum sits in the Backumer Tal in Herten, on the site of an open-air pool opened in 1928. The leisure bath itself, including its sauna landscape, opened in August 1989; an indoor sports hall with a 25-metre sports pool and a non-swimmer pool followed in 1992, the Copa Oase with its large sauna world began construction in 2002 and the wellness area opened in 2004. The fun-bath section was modernised from 2020 and reopened in 2022 with the action water playground and the double racer slide.

The water side is split between the Spassbad, the Sportbad and a summer Freibad. The brine pool is given as 1.35 metres deep at 34 degrees with a brine content of 1 to 1.5 per cent, fitted with massage loungers, massage benches, massage jets, pressurised water spouts for shoulder massage and floor bubblers. The operator states the percentage but does not say anywhere on these pages where the brine comes from, nor whether it is a natural spring water or salt added to the supply. The adventure pool is 1.35 metres deep at 32 degrees and adds a current channel; the hot whirlpool is 0.90 metres deep at 36 degrees and runs in intervals.

For attractions there is a double racer slide of 80 metres from a tower 12.5 metres high, with automatic timing shown on two monitors at the run-out, and water at 32 degrees. The action water playground covers 148 m2 at 32 degrees, with a tipping bucket of about 300 litres, three slides of 3.5 m, 5 m and just under 18 m, water cannons and a rope bridge. A baby pool runs 0.05 to 0.3 metres deep at 32 degrees with a slide of about 1.5 m, and there is a separate water play island.

The sauna offer is described on the homepage as eight saunas and a steam bath. The indoor part holds four indoor saunas plus the steam bath, along with a rest zone with a fountain, a fireplace corner, a plunge pool and an ice fountain; named cabins include the infrared sauna at 30 degrees, the herbal sauna at 85 degrees, the geyser sauna at 60 degrees, the starry-sky sauna at 85 degrees and the steam bath at 45 degrees. A sauna garden forms the outdoor part.

The Spassbad opens 10 to 21.30 on Monday and 8.30 to 21.30 Tuesday to Sunday; the Sportbad 10 to 21.30 on Monday and 7 to 21.30 Tuesday to Sunday; the sauna 10 to 22 on Monday and 9 to 22 Tuesday to Sunday. On Mondays the sauna world is women-only unless the Monday is a public holiday, and sauna access is for adults from 16. The tills close 90 minutes before the end of opening hours, with last admission at 20.00. The racer slide runs 10 to 20 and the action water playground until 20.00 daily.
