Bad Harzburger Sole-Therme mit Sauna-Erlebniswelt

The Bad Harzburger Sole-Therme stands at Nordhäuser Straße 2 A in Bad Harzburg, on the northern rim of the Harz in Lower Saxony, and is run by the town's own company, the Kur-, Tourismus- und Wirtschaftsbetriebe der Stadt Bad Harzburg GmbH. It is a brine bath built on a certified medicinal water, with a Sauna-Erlebniswelt of nine cabins and the Salz & Seele bistro, and the operator presents it as somewhere to come after a walk or an active day in the Harz. The site states that natural brine has risen here from 840 metres since 1966, and describes indoor and outdoor pools with swimming and massage sections. Admission is by ticket at the cash desk, with tickets for 1.5 hours, 2.5 hours and the whole day, separate tickets that include the sauna, and a rechargeable Bäder-Card also valid at the town's Silberbornbad. Bathrobes and towels can be hired, and the bath holds a „Barrierefreiheit geprüft“ certificate under the German Reisen für Alle scheme for October 2025 to September 2028. The operator notes that the bubble pool is currently unavailable because of building work and that it reduces the admission by 10 per cent in compensation.

Thermal water

According to the operator the healing brine of the Sole-Therme comes from the Dr. Harras-Schneider-Quelle at a depth of around 840 metres, and the source temperature is given as about 25 °C. The Bad Harzburger Natursole is described as containing around 2.8 per cent salt, rich in sodium and calcium. The site explains the geology: Bad Harzburg lies on the Nordharzrand thrust, a major tectonic fault zone along which ancient Harz rock layers were raised and folded over millions of years; the brine borehole met this structure at 488 metres and, down to its final depth, passed through Buntsandstein and the limestones and marls of the Muschelkalk, with the brine entering the borehole through strongly fissured limestone. Isotope studies, the operator writes, show that the mineral content originates in deeper Zechstein saline rocks. The published analysis of the spring gives, in milligrams per litre, sodium 7,040, potassium 106, magnesium 200, calcium 1,120, iron 0.60, manganese 0.07 and ammonium 0.34, a cation total of 8,467.01; and fluoride 3.97, chloride 10,700, sulphate 3,620, nitrite 0.005, nitrate 3.3 and hydrogen carbonate 70.0, an anion total of 14,393.30, with 22,860 mg/l of dissolved solids in all. The operator states that the brine is traditionally used for chronic and degenerative rheumatic illnesses, postural damage, scoliosis, lumbago and sciatica, muscular complaints, respiratory illnesses such as asthma and chronic bronchitis, signs of ageing and wear, vegetative complaints, and after-treatment following accidents, operations or fractures.

Pools

The operator describes indoor and outdoor pools fitted with swimming and massage functions, bathed in the undiluted Natursole, and states that movement in the water strengthens the muscles while sparing the joints — the basis of the Aqua-Fit sessions held in the pool. Swimwear is required throughout the bathing area; the house rules allow short or knee-length trunks, a bikini, a swimsuit or a burkini. Jumping and diving are not permitted anywhere in the thermal area, nor are snorkels, water balls, fins, air mattresses or water pistols. Entry closes one hour before the end of the day and the bathing zone has to be left 20 minutes before closing; in the outdoor area the operator may shorten opening hours in bad weather. The bubble pool is out of service for building work at the time of writing.

Sauna and wellness

The operator advertises nine individually designed sauna experiences, from gently tempered rooms to a classic Finnish cabin, and says a communal sauna session takes place every day, with changing infusions held according to the daily plan in the Naturstimmen-Sauna or the Aufguss-Arena. The Sole-Gabbro-Grotte, up to 60 °C, is lined with regional gabbro stone and has a softly splashing waterfall of Natursole that charges the air with fine salt particles at intervals, with pure brine salt provided for a body scrub; it holds about 10 guests. The Sanarium, up to 60 °C, is a mild cabin at around 70 per cent humidity with changing coloured light; the Aroma-Sauna reaches 65 °C and seats about six; the Rusti-Sauna at up to 90 °C is the hottest in the house; the Dampfsauna, up to 50 °C at 100 per cent humidity, takes six to eight guests; and outdoors stands the Kota-Sauna, a Finnish log hut up to 70 °C. The Aufguss-Arena is a panorama sauna of about 65 m² reaching 85 °C with room for up to 70 people and regular show infusions, and the Naturstimmen-Sauna, also up to 85 °C, seats about 20 under stream and birdsong sounds with Aquaviva coloured light. For cooling there is a snow sauna of about 14 m² at down to -10 °C with real snow for rubbing the skin. The whole sauna world is used without swimwear. Massage and therapy on site include classical and whole-body massage, foot-reflexology, lymph drainage, hot-stone and singing-bowl massage, paraffin-fango packs, kinesio taping and tub baths with brine or oil; the operator states that a therapeutic tub bath lasts about 15 minutes at a water temperature of 34-38 °C, and that many of these treatments can be given on a medical prescription. Hatha-Yoga runs on Monday mornings and Tuesday evenings and Rückenfit on Tuesday afternoons in the function room on the upper floor, booked at the thermal cash desk, and a physiotherapy practice and a beauty studio work in the building.

For children

The house rules state that children under 7 need a suitable accompanying adult, that children over 7 may come unaccompanied only if they hold the bronze German youth swimming badge and can show it, and that children and young people up to and including 16 are admitted to the sauna only in the company of an adult. Glass and porcelain containers may not be brought in, and eating and drinking are confined to the Salz & Seele restaurant, the Sole-Baude in the sauna world and the outdoor grounds.

Opening hours

The operator gives the Sole-Therme as open from Monday to Sunday and on public holidays from 09:00 to 20:00. The Sauna-Erlebniswelt opens later on weekdays, from 10:00 to 20:00 Monday to Friday, and from 09:00 to 20:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. A communal sauna session is held on all days. Entry closes an hour before the end of operation and the bathing zone is cleared 20 minutes before closing.
