Thermal bathBagnères-de-Luchon, Occitanie, France

Thermes de Luchon is a historic sulphurous thermal spa in Bagnères-de-Luchon in the Pyrenees, best known for its Vaporarium, a natural rock-cut steam cave that the official site describes as the only one of its kind in Europe.

About

Overview

Set in Bagnères-de-Luchon in the Haute-Garonne Pyrenees, the Thermes de Luchon draw on some of the most strongly sulphurous thermal waters in France and Europe. The waters are sodium-rich, alkaline and hyperthermal, rising from boreholes between roughly 170 and 730 metres deep at temperatures of 72°C, 65°C and 50°C.

The Vaporarium

The spa's signature feature is its Vaporarium, a network of galleries carved directly into the rock. According to the site, the sulphured Radio Vaporarium was created in 1929 and reveals some 1,200 metres of galleries, a natural hammam once conceived and used by the Romans. Visitors walk through a bath of sulphur vapours within the rock, in a natural steam bath maintained at between 38°C and 42°C with 95% humidity. The Thermes present it as the only natural hammam of its kind in Europe.

Thermal Water

The Luchon waters are described as sulphurous, sodic, alkaline and hyperthermal, with a sulphur content ranked among the highest in France and Europe. They emerge from deep boreholes at 72°C, 65°C and 50°C.
