Large sulphur-water thermal bath in Vienna's Oberlaa district, opened in 2010 and run by VAMED Vitality World.
About
Therme Wien is a thermal bath in the Oberlaa district of Vienna, in the city's tenth municipal district, Favoriten. The operator states that it opened in autumn 2010 and describes the site as occupying a total of 75,000 m², of which about 4,000 m² is water surface, some 3,000 m² sauna area, more than 6,000 m² a health centre and roughly 1,200 m² a fitness area; the German Wikipedia article gives the opening date as 27 September 2010. The bath is operated by VAMED Vitality World, which runs several other Austrian thermal resorts. A medical centre, Therme Wien Med, and a fitness centre share the site and are described by the operator as separate departments with their own opening hours.
The water comes from sulphur springs at Oberlaa. According to the operator, the resource has been used for cure purposes since 1969, and a second sulphur spring was drilled in 2009 which reaches the surface at 47 °C from a depth of 900 metres. The operator states that all pools except the sauna plunge pools and the Kneipp walk-through are filled with thermal water, and that pool temperatures vary between 32 and 36 °C depending on the pool. The exception is the 25-metre sports pool, given as 1.50 m deep and kept between 24 and 28 °C. Apart from the diving pool, which is 4 metres deep, the pools are stated to be 1.35 m deep.
The bathing areas are organised into named zones rather than counted: the Thermenlandschaften with two thermal pools and an activity pool, the SaunaStein sauna complex, ErlebnisStein & Wildnis with slides, a wild-water channel and a diving pool with three platforms, Stein der Ruhe with grotto, bubble and quiet pools, and the outdoor Garten der Inspiration with two thermal pools, a brine pool, the sports pool and a ring-shaped spring-water pool. The sauna complex is spread over 3,000 m² and two floors and is divided into women's, men's and mixed sections, each with Finnish saunas at 90 °C and further cabins such as bio-sauna, steam bath, tepidarium and laconium.
Neither a pool count nor a sauna count is published by the operator; both are listed by name and area only. The bath is open daily and on public holidays from 09:00 to 22:00, with bathing ending at 21:40. It is closed on 24 December and open from 09:00 to 14:00 on 31 December, with last admission at 11:00.
