A thermal bath in Merano, South Tyrol, whose radon-bearing water travels 1,200 metres by tunnel from springs above Lana, feeding 26 pools in a park of 52,124 m².

About

Therme Meran is a thermal bath in Merano, in South Tyrol, built around a cube of glass by the architect Matteo Thun and set in a park of 52,124 m². The venue counts 26 pools, 879 hectolitres of thermal water and 2,231 m² of sauna area.

The water

The water rises from springs near the Vigiljoch above Lana, about 8 km away, and reaches the bath through a tunnel 1,200 metres long — it has been used here since 1966. The granite of that area enriches the rainwater with radon, fluoride and rare metals; the venue attributes the water's effect to its radon content together with its ionisation, its mineral salts and the particular combination of gases and metals it carries. Clinical approval came from the Provincial Medical Officer by decree No. 2677 of 30 June 1966 and from the Italian Ministry of Health in Rome on 23 June 1966.

Stated uses

According to the venue the water suits chronic respiratory illness and rheumatic joint conditions, given as inhalations and as baths, and it reports that for allergic rhinitis the thermal cure has matched the results of a cortisone nasal spray. It also describes calming and pain-relieving effects on the nervous system, lower blood pressure and dilated vessels, and a strengthened respiratory immune system. A consultation with the bath's sanitary director is required before any thermal-water therapy.
