A year-round municipal-scale spa in the pine woods behind Bibione beach, opened in 1996 on hyperthermal artesian water found by oil prospectors, pairing indoor and outdoor thermal pools joined by a crescent channel with a full SSN-contracted medical department.

About

Bibione Thermae sits a few steps from the Adriatic in the pine belt behind the resort of Bibione, in the Veneto. Its water was found by accident: AGIP boreholes sunk around San Michele al Tagliamento in the early 1970s while prospecting for hydrocarbons struck artesian thermal aquifers a few kilometres from the beach. Later surveys traced a geothermal anomaly peaking near the IV Bacino hamlet, five kilometres north of Bibione, where water at about 500 metres reaches 52 °C and stands under one to three atmospheres of wellhead pressure. Chemically it is classed as hyperthermal and medium-mineral, alkaline sodium bicarbonate with fluoride, and it has been recognised for therapeutic use by the Italian health ministry since 1996, which is why several treatment cycles here are contracted to the national health service.

Fifteen years of study preceded construction; the site broke ground in 1995 and the baths opened in 1996, rated in the highest Italian category for thermal establishments. The complex is laid out as four numbered buildings. One holds reception and consulting rooms; a second stacks mud therapy, balneotherapy, inhalation and ENT departments, a salt room and a rehabilitation floor; a third is given over to hydrokinesitherapy and a vascular walk; the fourth holds the bathing side proper, with the pool reception and changing rooms and outdoor thermal park at ground level, the wellness area and restaurant above, and the SPA beauty farm on the top floor.

For bathers the draw is a crescent of water that runs from the indoor hall out into the garden, held at 33 to 34 °C, so the outdoor half stays usable in winter. Both halves carry hydromassage jets, geysers, waterfalls and counter-current channels, with water games for children outside and a wooded lawn for loungers. The separate wellness area adds saunas with scheduled Aufguss sessions, a steam bath, herbal cabins, a polarium, a solarium and a darkened relax room with waterbeds. The operator describes the centre as open all year, and prices the pools and the wellness area as separate or combined day tickets.
