A deliberately small village bath in Vas County built on thermal water that a 1964 hydrocarbon exploration borehole found by accident, with six pools, a single Finnish sauna and a hotel, campsite and apartment park sharing the same plot.
About
Mesteri Termálfürdő lies in a village of a few hundred people in Vas County, within sight of the volcanic cone of Ság-hegy, and it makes no attempt to be large. The bath, a sixteen-room hotel, a campsite and a recently opened apartment park share one plot, and the hotel building adjoins the bath so that guests reach the pools and the sauna without going outside. The thermal water was not sought for bathing at all: the operator dates the supply to a hydrocarbon exploration borehole drilled near Mesteri in 1964, and the bath grew up around what that drilling found.
According to the bath's own account the water rises from 1,800 metres at 72 °C and belongs to the calcium-magnesium-hydrogencarbonate group, the type Hungarian usage calls earthy-calcareous. The pools are listed by number rather than by name. Two are summer-only open-air basins at 32-34 °C, a 190 m² lido pool and an 80 m² children's paddling pool. Two medicinal seated pools, numbered 2/A and 2/B, share a further 190 m². Two more are billed as cave baths: an 80 m² covered pool at 35-37 °C and a 40 m² half-covered pool at 36-38 °C. A single Finnish sauna runs daily from 9:30 to 17:30, is sold only as an add-on to a bath ticket, and is used without swimwear, with towels not provided.
The operator's claims for the water are unusually restrained. More than thirty years of experience, the page says, show it acting favourably on musculoskeletal and rheumatic complaints, while a high carbonic acid content is credited with an effect on circulatory disorders; those are the two indications the catalogue already records. There is no wellness department, no slide and no published water analysis, and the site sells quiet, birdsong and the planting around the pools rather than attractions. Notices on the bath page are worth reading before a visit: at the time of writing pool 2/A was out of service for maintenance and the temperatures of the other pools had been shifted to compensate.
