Harkany Spa

Harkányi Gyógy- és Strandfürdő is a thermal and beach bath in Harkány, in southern Hungary. It is built around a certified medicinal spring and is organised into several divisions: an indoor thermal spa (Gyógyfürdő), an open-air beach bath (Strandfürdő), a water world (Harka Vízivilág), a sauna area (Szaunavilág), a covered children's area and a wellness and spa section. A rheumatology specialist clinic operates on site.

The water

The site states that Harkány's hot spring rises from a depth of 50-70 metres and reaches the surface at an average temperature of around 62 degrees Celsius. Its total dissolved mineral content is given as roughly 990 mg per litre. The water's defining component is a carbon sulphide (COS) compound carrying bivalent sulphur at about 12 mg per litre; on contact with air this converts into hydrogen sulphide gas, and the site describes its absorption as far more effective than ordinary tetravalent sulphur compounds. This sulphur compound was identified during chemical analysis in the 1860s. The published composition also lists hydrogencarbonate (525 mg/l), sodium (158 mg/l), chloride (105 mg/l), silicic acid (55 mg/l), calcium (50 mg/l) and free carbon dioxide (242 mg/l), among other cations and anions.

Medical use

The water is used as a certified medicinal water. According to the site it is applied to locomotor and arthritic disorders, degenerative spinal and joint conditions, osteoporosis, disorders of lymphatic circulation, and chronic gynaecological inflammations; the bath cites an earlier finding that 30 percent of previously infertile women treated there later became pregnant. Psoriasis is noted as responding well, and dermatological treatments are offered. The wellness area also provides body-composition and posture analysis using Visbody 3D scanners, alongside manual lymphatic drainage, cupping, ear candling, reflex-zone (foot) massage and BEMER device therapy.

Pools and saunas

The indoor thermal spa lists five pools: an open thermal pool at 34-36 degrees, a covered thermal pool at 36-38 degrees, a half-covered thermal pool at 32-34 degrees, and two covered children's pools at 30-35 degrees that operate in poor weather. Its pools have a combined water surface of 2,098 square metres and depths of 110-153 cm, and the thermal building was completely refurbished in 2003. The open-air beach bath adds seven further pools, including a hot-water pool (30-32 degrees), a swimming pool (24-26 degrees), two "butterfly" pools (26-28 and 30-32 degrees), a children's pool (34-35 degrees), a sauna cold-plunge pool (20-22 degrees) and a slide-and-plunge pool (24-26 degrees). Surface areas here include a 1,050 square-metre sports pool, butterfly pools of 1,460 and 1,520 square metres and a 220 square-metre children's pool. Finnish-type saunas are provided in both the indoor building and the open-air section.

Wellness and facilities

The wellness section features an effervescent bath and jacuzzi pools at 32-33 degrees, body-massage water jets, two high-intensity neck shower jets and four bubbly beds. A broad menu of massages and treatments is offered, including lymphatic and anti-cellulite massage, paraffin wax treatments, honey and chocolate massage, vacuum massage and aromatherapy massage. Spa cosmetics and a medical research programme are also listed. The site notes the region enjoys roughly 2,100-2,200 sunny hours a year, and the open-air facilities operate seasonally from May through October.

Visiting

For 2026 the thermal spa and water world adult day ticket is listed at 7,500 Ft in non-priority periods and 8,000 Ft in priority periods (Fridays, weekends, public and school holidays, and the summer season). The bath is at Kossuth L. u. 7, 7815 Harkány. Opening hours change seasonally, and the site advises checking current hours before a visit.
