About
Maximare is a leisure bath and sauna complex in Hamm in Westphalia, operated by Erlebnistherme Bad Hamm GmbH. It stands in the Bad Hamm district, which was a spa town between 1882 and 1955 on the strength of artesian brine in the city area; the German Wikipedia article on Bad Hamm notes that the brine spring has since dried up and that Maximare, the successor building to the former Jahnbad, continues the town's bathing tradition. The operator calls Maximare one of the largest and most varied leisure thermal baths in the region and gives its extent as more than 15,000 square metres, divided into four named worlds: Aquawelt, Saunawelt, Wellnesswelt and Gastrowelt.
The brine at Maximare is not drawn from a spring on site. The operator states that the outdoor brine pool is fed with original Leinethaler natural brine, at 33 °C, in a basin of 450 m² and 1.35 m depth with a brine concentration of 3.5 to 4 per cent, fitted with bubble loungers, cascades, massage jets and underwater music. Brine gymnastics is run daily on weekday mornings and on Monday and Wednesday evenings. The Aquawelt also contains a 50-metre sports pool, a wave and adventure pool linked by a channel with a current channel and waterfall, cold and warm pools with a whirlpool, event slides, an underwater aquarium and a children's area.
The sauna area is certified at five stars under the Deutscher Sauna-Bund SaunaPremium scheme, most recently in 2017. The operator states that three saunas are indoors and four more stand in the sauna garden, and that temperatures run from 45 °C for beginners to 110 °C. The named cabins are Sinnesbad at 65 °C, ArenaMare at 90 °C, Fegefeuer at 90 °C, Salzsauna at 90 °C and Erdsauna at 110 °C, with a brine grotto, steam bath and deep-heat lounge alongside. Two Guinness records were set on the site, for the longest sliding distance in 24 hours in 2011 and for nations represented in one sauna in 2010.
The Aquawelt opens 08:00 to 20:00 Monday to Thursday, 08:00 to 22:00 on Friday, 09:00 to 22:00 on Saturday and 09:00 to 20:00 on Sunday; the Saunawelt opens 09:00 to 23:00 daily, with Monday reserved as a women's sauna day. At the time of writing the adventure pool is closed for construction work, and the operator is discounting Aquawelt tickets by 2 euros and family and friends tickets by 4 euros because of it.
