A municipally run cure house in a small Haute-Garonne town whose brine is the most mineralised thermal water in Europe at 322 g/l, close to Dead Sea strength, with a small day spa attached under the name Salinea Spa.

About

The thermal baths of Salies-du-Salat sit in the centre of a town of about two thousand people in the south of the Haute-Garonne, roughly midway between Toulouse and the Pyrenees at some 300 metres of altitude. The operator dates the town's thermal activity to 1885 and the building is known for its neo-Egyptian peristyle facade, with the motto In sale salus, health through salt, carved on the pediment. The salt came first: the water of the puits sale, the salt well, surfaced in the park of the old baths and was long used to make household salt, and marble basins found on the site suggest the Romans were already bathing in it.

What sets the place apart is the strength of the brine. The operator calls it the most mineralised thermal water in Europe at 322 grams per litre, a salinity in the range of the Dead Sea, and says that a tonne of salt is used for each patient over a course. The buoyancy that comes with water this dense is the point of the rheumatology treatment, letting stiff patients move in ways they cannot on land. The establishment is approved for three reimbursed indications: rheumatology, gynaecology, and developmental disorders in children, the last of which very few French spas are licensed to treat and which is accepted here from the age of three months.

Cures run as the classic French three-week prescribed course, with shorter one-week mini-cures and single treatments sold separately. Inside the same building is Salinea Spa, the leisure side: a pool filled with thermal water at 32 degrees, a jacuzzi, a sauna and a hammam, along with aquabike, aquagym and aquafitness classes, scrubs and massages, reflexology, shiatsu, relaxation and hypnosis sessions and a fitness room. The spa is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 18:00, while the cure season is limited: in 2026 the baths take patients from 15 June to 7 November.
