Bogn Engiadina

Bogn Engiadina Scuol is the mineral bath of Scuol, the main village of the Lower Engadine in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It was opened in spring 1993 and combines a bathing landscape, a sauna landscape, a separate Roman-Irish bath and a therapy and wellness centre in one octagonal building glazed by a central roof light. Contrary to common belief, the house is not a thermal bath under the Swiss definition, which requires water to emerge above 20 °C, but a warm mineral bath: the Scuol springs reach the surface cold at roughly 6 to 8 °C and the water is heated afterwards, with a geothermal plant and heat recovery covering about half of the building's energy demand.

The springs themselves are the reason the village became a spa. Over twenty mineral springs rise along a six-kilometre stretch on both banks of the Inn, owing their existence to the geological window of the Lower Engadine, and their mineral content ranges from 1.1 to 17 grams of dissolved salt per litre. They were first mentioned in writing in 1369, were used in the Middle Ages, and made Scuol, Tarasp and Vulpera internationally known spa resorts around a century ago. The operator states that, apart from the brine and cold-water pools, the bath is filled with pure mineral water from the Vi, Sotsass, Tulai and Chalzina springs.

The bathing area offers six indoor and outdoor baths with massage jets, bubblers, waterfalls and a current channel, together with a brine pool. The operator gives the outdoor panorama pool at about 34 °C over 161.5 m², the exercise pool at about 33 °C over 152.5 m², the two-per-cent brine pool at about 33 °C over 71 m², the whirlpool and the warm-water grotto at about 37 °C, the cold-water grotto at about 16 °C and a textile steam bath at about 46 °C. The Roman-Irish bath is a separate naked area for adults only and runs as a booked ceremony of alternating steam and cold-water baths with massage lasting up to three and a half hours.

The bath is open all year; the bathing landscape runs daily from 08:00 to 21:45, with under-18s admitted from 10:30, and the sauna landscape from 09:00 to 21:45 with a women-only Thursday morning.
