About
Terme Antica Querciolaia is a thermal bathing and treatment complex in Rapolano Terme, in the province of Siena, Tuscany. It is built around natural thermal springs that feed pools kept at differentiated temperatures, and combines open-air and covered bathing with thermal cures, wellness treatments and specialist medicine. The historic core of the complex dates to the second half of the 19th century.
Thermal water
The site draws on naturally sourced thermal springs whose waters are used both by immersion and by inhalation. The water is sulphurous (with a noted hydrogen-sulphide odour) and mineral-rich. Stated analyses give, for the hot water, bicarbonates 2,235 mg/l, sulphates 887 mg/l, calcium 823 mg/l and magnesium 178 mg/l; for the temperate water, bicarbonates 1,947 mg/l, sulphates 650 mg/l, calcium 683 mg/l and magnesium 136 mg/l. Fluorides, sodium, potassium and chlorides are also present. The presence of algae is described as one of the fundamental active principles of the water.
Pools and temperatures
The complex has both covered and uncovered thermal pools, fed by springs at differentiated temperatures. Hot baths are stated at 39–40°C and temperate baths at 30–34°C, with hot, temperate and cold waters available. An external pool remains accessible during the cold season through a sheltered entrance. The pools are set within a wellness park described as covering over 43,000 m².
Medical indications
According to the venue, the thermal waters are indicated for a range of conditions treated by immersion or inhalation: respiratory and ENT conditions (rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, otitis); osteo-articular conditions (chronic rheumatism, chronic arthropathies and trauma sequelae); and skin conditions (acne, seborrhoea, eczema, urticaria, psoriasis).
Wellness and treatments
Alongside bathing, the complex offers thermal wellness and aesthetic services, thermal cures and treatments, and specialist medicine. The wellness programme includes aesthetic-therapeutic massages of Eastern and Western tradition, body treatments, regenerating treatments, thermal-synergy massotherapies, daily thermal-synergy pathways, daily spa programmes and couple treatments. The venue also produces a cosmetic line combining mineral elements from the thermal water with plant oils and extracts.
History
The thermal complex's core dates to the second half of the 19th century, with an original structure designed in a horseshoe shape in warm-toned travertine to enclose the spring. The site notes that Garibaldi visited in August 1867 and reported relief from a foot injury. The complex has since been expanded with modern infrastructure.
