Les Bains de Saint-Thomas

The Bains de Saint-Thomas lie at Fontpédrouse in the Catalan Pyrenees, near Font-Romeu, the Cerdagne and Prades, in what the operator calls an amphitheatre of stone at 1,150 metres of altitude. A naturally sulphurous spring rises here at 58 °C, one of the hottest in the Pyrenean massif; the French Wikipedia article on Fontpédrouse records that the commune has seen renewed activity since its thermal baths, the bains de Saint-Thomas, were renovated in 1993, calls the water hyperthermal and one of the hottest natural springs of the Pyrenees, and adds that the baths hold six natural hot sulphurous springs. The water is described as sulphurous, bicarbonated and rich in trace elements, with analgesic, muscle-relaxing, healing and relaxing properties, and the establishment sells a range of dermo-cosmetic products made with the thermal plankton drawn from the same water.

The bathing itself is entirely outdoors: three open-air thermal pools set among the mountains. The main pool has two swan-neck spouts; a second pool holds a jacuzzi with ten horizontal jets, two vertical geysers and two cascades; and there is a paddling pool for children and for resting, with shower rails fed by regulated thermal water. The operator states that in spring and summer the pools are adjusted to around 34–35 °C and in autumn and winter to 37 °C. Booking is not required for the outdoor baths but is advised at busy times, swim shorts are barred on hygiene grounds, and swimsuits can be hired at reception for 2 €.

An indoor wellness area is sold as a separate or combined ticket. It contains a vaporarium fed with natural sulphurous thermal vapours, a hammam scented with essential oils, a sauna, a large whirlpool and a rest and relaxation room; the full formula also gives access to the outdoor pools, the relaxation area and the tea room, where a hot drink is included. The vaporarium was created in 2011, when one of the hammam rooms was fitted with a purpose-built reservoir through which thermal water from the source circulates at 58 °C; the operator says that at the time it knew of only one other in Europe, at Bagnères-de-Luchon, and that work in late 2016 and early 2017 made the vaporarium a separate room. It is kept at 33–35 °C in naturally humid air, a gentle heat recommended for the airways and the skin. The hammam is a large vaulted room at 40–42 °C with cold hand showers, and the sauna is a dry room heated to about 80 °C. Massages, treatments and Watsu aquatic bodywork are bookable in addition.

The baths are open all year, every day from 10:00 to 19:40, and from 10:00 to 20:30 from 14 July to the end of the summer holidays and during the Christmas and February school holidays; the wellness area opens daily from 10:00 to 19:30 except on Mondays, when it opens at 11:00 for cleaning. The published 2026 closures are 1 May, the only public holiday on which the baths shut, and the whole month of June 2026. The establishment holds the Tourisme Handicap label.
