Termas do Vimeiro

Thermal bathTorres Vedras, Lisboa, Portugal

Traditional Portuguese thermal spa near Torres Vedras, fed by low-temperature sodium-chloride mineral springs offering classic thermalism and wellness treatments.

About

Termas do Vimeiro is a classic Portuguese thermal spa set halfway between the village of Maceira and Porto Novo Beach in the Torres Vedras municipality, about 45 km from Lisbon. The buildings sit along the Alcabrichel River, framed by natural escarpments and local vegetation.

Thermal water and springs

Two mineral springs feed the spa. The Fonte dos Frades yields a chloride-sodium water (secondarily calcium-bicarbonate), classified as hypersaline with a total mineralisation around 4,100 mg/L, a near-neutral pH (about 7.0) and low temperatures of roughly 24-27 °C. The Fonte de Santa Isabel is a bicarbonate-chloride sodium-calcium water (mesosaline, mineralisation about 1,022 mg/L). The waters are rich in mineral salts and trace elements, with therapeutic properties reputedly recognised since Roman times.

Baths and treatments

  • Immersion baths and air-bubble baths
  • Hydromassage
  • Vichy shower, Scottish shower and circular shower
  • Aerosol therapy and inhalations
  • Therapeutic massages

Individual treatment cabins occupy the ground floor, with separate male and female changing facilities above; an outdoor buvete (drinking fountain) stands in a covered garden.

Wellness

The spa runs medically supervised classic thermalism and wellness programmes, with indications for digestive, respiratory, skin and circulatory conditions.

Setting

Housed in a traditional Portuguese thermal building with documented use of its springs since the 19th century, the spa lies in a quiet riverside valley in Portugal's Oeste region.
