Kūrorta rehabilitācijas centrs "Jaunķemeri"

Jūrmala, Latvia

Historic Ķemeri-area resort rehabilitation centre in Jūrmala offering curative sulphurous mineral-water and therapeutic-mud baths, 300 m from the sea.

About

The Resort Rehabilitation Centre "Jaunķemeri" is Latvia's largest inpatient rehabilitation facility, continuing the historic Ķemeri sulphur-spring and mud-cure traditions dating back to the 1838 resort. It sits between the sea and Lake Sloka, 35 km from Riga and about 300 m from Jaunķemeri beach, and treats over 12,000 patients a year.

Sulphur & mineral water

Three wells on site supply the centre's natural cures: sulphurous (hydrogen-sulphide), bromine and sodium-chloride mineral water. The bromine water is drawn from a well roughly 1 km deep. The waters feed balneotherapy baths, including hydrogen-sulphide and bromine mineral-water baths.

Therapeutic mud

Peat therapeutic mud is excavated from the Lake Sloka swamp (a peat bog started in 1981) and prepared on site, with about 40 tonnes used monthly; the centre is the only Baltic facility practising environmentally friendly mud regeneration. The mud is biostimulating, antimicrobial and antioxidant.

  • Mud applications (4-5 cm layer, 10-15 min)
  • Sulphurous mud baths (40 kg mud in a 200 L bath at 38-39°C, 10-20 min; mud heated to ~42-50°C before use)
  • Combined balneo- and mud-therapy course with consultation, bath and massage (~2 h)
  • Pearl baths, chamber baths and underwater massage

Pool, sauna & facilities

A 13 x 12 m variable-depth swimming pool is used for water exercise and swimming, with a sauna and steam bath for pool visitors. The centre has 385 beds for accommodation, a dining hall with diet therapy, a fitness centre, and outdoor recreation in Jaunķemeri Park, dosed walking trails, and the neighbouring Ķemeri National Park.
