Sky Lagoon

Sky Lagoon is a geothermal bathing lagoon at Kársnes Harbour in Kópavogur, on the coast a short distance from central Reykjavík. The English Wikipedia article states that construction began in early 2020 and was completed in 2021, and describes the site as a geothermal spa fed by natural hot water from a great depth. The design draws on Icelandic building tradition: the entrance passes through a cave tunnel, and a turf wall and turf house are part of the structure. The lagoon has an infinity edge facing the North Atlantic, and the operator notes that the glacier-capped volcano Snæfellsjökull and Keilir mountain can be seen from the water in clear conditions.

The lagoon itself is kept at approximately 38 to 40 °C, and the operator warns that Icelandic weather can affect the experience and that the temperature can vary. At its deepest point the lagoon is 120 cm deep. The recommended length of a visit is one and a half to two hours. Children under 12 are not admitted, and visitors aged 12 to 14 must be accompanied by a guardian aged 18 or over.

The site is organised around the Skjól ritual, a seven-step sequence that the operator publishes with its temperatures: the lagoon at 38–40 °C, a cold plunge inspired by the historic Snorralaug pool at 5 °C, a turf house, a sauna at 80–90 °C with sea-facing windows, a cold mist at about 5 °C, a body scrub, and a steam room at 46 °C, ending with a crowberry juice elixir. Two saunas are offered, described as a classic and a phone-free cabin. Two tiers of changing facilities are sold as separate tickets: Saman with shower cubicles and a shared changing area, and Sér with private showers and changing areas.

Opening hours are seasonal. From 21 October to 30 April the lagoon opens 10:00 to 21:00; from 1 May to 20 June, 10:00 to 22:00; from 21 June to 20 August, 08:00 to 23:00; and from 21 August to 20 October, 09:00 to 22:00. Guests are asked to leave the lagoon 30 minutes before closing, and the Skjól ritual and Gelmir Bar close an hour earlier. Separate holiday hours apply from 24 December to 1 January.
