About

Earth Lagoon Mývatn, until recently Mývatn Nature Baths, is a geothermal lagoon in Þingeyjarsveit in north-east Iceland, opened in 2004 and renamed by its operator. It is the quieter northern counterpart to the lagoons of the south-west.

The water

The water is drawn from depths of up to 2,500 metres and reaches the lagoon at 36 to 40 °C. The venue describes it as alkaline and low in bacteria, and says it may support skin health; iron dominates the analysis we hold.

The lagoon and steam bath

Bathing is in the lagoon itself, with a hot tub alongside. The steam bath is a swim-in cave where steam rises through natural geothermal vents, at an average of 45 °C and full humidity.

Eating and services

Swim-up bars serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks in the water, and the Earth Lagoon Bistro is on site. Massages are booked for 30 or 60 minutes.

Visiting

The lagoon is open daily from 10:00 to 23:00, though the venue notes hours vary by season; the catalogue also holds a 12:00 to 22:00 schedule from an earlier reading. Admission runs in three tiers — Earth Essential from 7,900 ISK, Earth Signature from 9,900 ISK and Earth Exclusive from 52,000 ISK. A swimsuit rents for 1,100 ISK and a towel for 1,200 ISK. Children of five and under enter free with an adult. The pools are outdoors and the site has step-free access.
