High-altitude radon hot-spring balneological resort near Dushanbe, famed for its natural thermal steam (radon-emanatorium) and radon baths.

About

Khoja Obi Garm is one of Tajikistan's most famous high-mountain balneological resorts, founded in 1934 and set at roughly 1,740-1,960 m above sea level in a scenic gorge on the southern slope of the Hissar (Gissar) Range, about 48 km north of Dushanbe.

Radon thermal water

The resort is fed by weakly mineralized nitrogen-siliceous thermal springs rich in silicic acid and carrying low, therapeutic levels of radon (about 0.3-6.4 nCi/l). Spring water emerges very hot, with reported temperatures ranging from about 45-65 up to 95-96 C. It is one of only a handful of resorts worldwide that uses naturally escaping radioactive thermal steam for treatment.

Baths and steam-radon procedures

  • Radon baths using cooled thermal water
  • Steam-radon treatments in a dedicated "emanatorium" harnessing the natural radon- and hydrogen-sulphide-bearing thermal steam
  • Therapeutic showers and inhalations
  • Mud therapy (silt/peloids)

Care targets cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, peripheral nervous system, gynecological, digestive and skin conditions, delivered through a resort polyclinic, bath houses and a mud-treatment center.

Accommodation and setting

The sanatorium complex, with renovated buildings and a branch facility 12 km away in the Varzob valley, can host up to about 700 guests. The mountain climate is cool and green (July averages near 24 C), and the resort typically operates seasonally from roughly May to November.
