Grutas Tolantongo

Grutas Tolantongo is a natural thermal resort set deep in a dramatic canyon in the municipality of Cardonal, Hidalgo, Mexico. Turquoise, mineral-rich spring water flows through the site at a warm, near-constant temperature, feeding a river, a cave, a tunnel and dozens of pools built into the cliffs.

Thermal river

A shallow thermal river winds roughly 1.5 km along the canyon floor, holding a steady 36-38 C (97-100 F) year-round. Swimwear is required, and food, drinks, soaps and detergents are prohibited to keep the water clean.

Cave (gruta) and tunnel

The thermal water emerges from a large cave and a narrow rocky tunnel, where natural steam and rock formations create a sauna-like experience. The tunnel water also sits at 36-38 C. Both are rugged and slippery, so visitors are asked to walk carefully and move steadily through.

Cliffside thermal pools

Around 40 stepped thermal pools are terraced into the face of the cliff, filling with warm water that overflows from level to level and looks out over the canyon. Like the river, they run at about 36-38 C and are open to day visitors as well as overnight guests.

Hotels and camping

Overnight options include two hotels, La Gruta and El Paraiso Escondido, alongside a large campground for tents and vehicles. The park is open to day visitors.
