Torre Annunziata, Italy
Terme Vesuviane is a historic thermal establishment in Torre Annunziata, near Naples, operating since 1831 and drawing on a salt-alkaline earthy-bicarbonate water rich in iodine. It offers Italian National Health Service (SSN) accredited thermal cures for respiratory and osteoarticular conditions, alongside physiotherapy and fitness services.
About
Terme Vesuviane is a thermal and rehabilitation centre in Torre Annunziata, in the province of Naples, Campania. The establishment traces its origins to 1831 and combines SSN-accredited thermal treatments with physiotherapy and supervised fitness activities. It presents itself around the themes of health, wellbeing and rehabilitation (Salute, Benessere e Riabilitazione).
Thermal water
The spring water is classified as a salt-alkaline earthy-bicarbonate water (acqua salso alcalina terrosa bicarbonata) that is very rich in iodine. According to the establishment, the waters have been known and used since Roman times and were declared highly therapeutic in 1833 following analysis by scientists of the period.
Medical indications
The site states that the thermal cures address pathologies of the respiratory system and disorders of osteoarticular (bone and joint) function.
Thermal treatments
Thermal treatments accredited by the Italian National Health Service (SSN) include baths and mud treatments, aerosol and inhalation therapy, and balneotherapy. Additional thermal treatments offered outside SSN accreditation include endotympanic insufflations, treatment of rhinogenic deafness, pulmonary ventilation, the Politzer maneuver, and nasal douches.
Physiotherapy and rehabilitation
The centre provides physiotherapy services including massage therapy, motor and postural re-education, electrotherapy, CO2 laser, shock wave therapy, ultrasound, tecartherapy, infrared, cryotherapy, and lymphatic drainage. As of February 2026 the site notes the addition of ultrasound (imaging) diagnostics.
Fitness activities
Supervised fitness and gym activities include Pilates, aerobics, boxing preparation, total-body training, aquagym, and functional gymnastics.
History
The site recounts that the earliest thermal facility on the location served the elite of Oplontis, a suburb of Pompeii, and was associated with the Roman consul Marcus Crassus Frugi, an attribution linked to a Latin inscription found in 1749 near Porta Marina. The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. destroyed the ancient complex, which then remained hidden for more than eighteen centuries. On 18 June 1831 the Bourbon general Marquis Vito Nunziante identified a mineralized water source near Capo Oncino; the strongly mineralized waters were analysed and declared highly therapeutic in 1833. The establishment was subsequently known as Terme Nunziante, then Nunziante-Montella, and later Vesuviane.
