Terme "Respighi" di Tabiano

The Terme di Tabiano, historically known as the Terme "Respighi" and presented as the "Breathing Spa", is a thermal establishment in Tabiano Bagni, a locality of Salsomaggiore Terme in the province of Parma (Emilia-Romagna). It is operated by Terme di Salsomaggiore e di Tabiano and is located at Via alle Terme 32. The centre treats both adults and children, applying its sulphurous waters to respiratory, ear-nose-throat and skin conditions, and also houses the T-Spatium wellness centre.

Thermal water

According to the operator, the spring water of Tabiano is a cold, sulphurous sulphate-calcium-magnesium water with a very high content of hydrogen sulphide, ranked among the waters with the highest concentration of sulphates and sulphur gases in Europe and known since the 1800s for its sulphur richness. The water originates from the erosive action of meteoric waters on calcareous rocks of Miocene origin.

Health indications

The establishment states that its waters are used for the prevention and treatment of conditions of the bronchi, ears, nose and throat, including rhinitis and chronic catarrhal rhinosinusitis, allergies, pharyngitis and laryngitis, and bronchopathy and bronchitis. It is also used for skin conditions such as burns, psoriasis, eczema, acne and atopic and contact dermatitis.

Treatments

Stated therapeutic services include inhalations, aerosol treatments, showers, irrigations and respiratory rehabilitation, together with mud treatments, skin care and massages. The T-Spatium wellness centre offers a heated thermal pool (water at 32-35°C), a spa area with sauna, Turkish bath, a Kneipp pathway, a hydrotherapy tub and aromatic showers, plus thermal rituals using local mud and thermal water, body and facial beauty treatments, massages and naturopathic consultations.

History

The first thermal establishment in Tabiano, founded in 1841, was the Terme Emilio Respighi, which the site notes was appreciated by Maria Luigia of Austria, Duchess of Parma. It records that opera singers including Caruso, Teresa Stolz, Adelina Patti and Tamagno benefited from its waters.

Visiting

The therapeutic Terme Respighi operates on a seasonal thermal-season basis. The T-Spatium wellness centre is stated to be closed on Mondays and open Tuesday to Friday 9:00-13:00 and 14:30-18:30, and Saturday and Sunday 9:00-18:30.
