Locanda di San Martino

Antiche Termae Romanae is the wellness circuit of the Locanda di San Martino hotel in the Sassi of Matera, built in tunnels and rock cisterns and themed around the myth of Medusa. Guests move through a fixed sequence: after changing in the apodyterium, an anti-tepidarium at 28°C gives a warm chromotherapy shower, then a calidarium (hammam) above 50°C at 100% humidity, a dry sauna above 50°C, a fenugreek biosauna at 40°C and 40% humidity, a cold shower, and a stone hydromassage tub with chaise longues. The circuit ends with a swim in the frigidarium, a cave pool at 29°C with a foot-and-lower-back hydromassage cistern, and a tepidarium cistern at 30°C with chromotherapy and lighting effects, where herbal tea is served. The circuit lasts up to 90 minutes; access is barred under 18, booking is required in advance, and guests must bring a swimsuit and sandals (a cap is compulsory in the pool even without hair). The operator states, per Italian law 323/2000, that the water inside the wellness center has no therapeutic or curative function. Optional add-ons include holistic partial and full-body massages and candle massages. Opening hours: mornings 09:00-13:00, afternoons 14:00-21:30.
