A thermal resort at Suio Terme in the Garigliano valley of southern Lazio, built on springs the operator identifies with the Roman Thermae Aquae Vescinae and drawing hyperthermal sulphurous water that emerges at 54.5°C.

About

Complesso Termale Vescine stands at Suio di Castelforte, in the hills above the Garigliano river on the southern edge of Lazio near the Campania border. The bathing and treatment area covers some 2,740 square metres inside a large private park, and the operator presents itself as the successor of the Roman Thermae Aquae Vescinae, which it dates to the 2nd century AD. Alongside the thermal complex the estate runs a hotel of 48 Executive and Junior Suite rooms, two restaurants and an events business, so day visitors and residential spa guests share the same grounds.

The water is the reason the place exists, and the operator publishes its analysis in unusual detail. It is classified as hyperthermal sulphurous-alkaline-bicarbonate-earthy water, emerging at the spring at 54.5°C with a fixed residue at 100°C of 2.268 grams per litre. The dominant ions are bicarbonate at 1,668.5 mg/l, calcium at 364.5 mg/l and magnesium at 142.54 mg/l, with sodium, sulphate, chloride and potassium in significant quantity and free carbonic and hydrogen sulphide gases present. The house also claims the Suio water is among the most iodine-rich in Italy.

Bathing is in two thermal pools held at deliberately different temperatures. The Relax pool is the panoramic one, set among trees and fed straight from the spring known as the Bagno Fresco at a natural 25°C, with hydromassage stations along its edges. The Smart pool is the warm and technical one, supplied continuously from another of the estate's springs at a constant 35°C and equipped with 37 hydromassage points and 16 cascades arranged as a wellness circuit. The Relax pool runs 09.00 to 19.00, with late openings until 01.00 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings.

The medical side is formally accredited rather than decorative. Regione Lazio decree 1230/99 of 10 September 1999 authorised the establishment to operate its thermo-mineral waters for baths, muds, inhalations, aerosols, tubal insufflations, irrigations, hydromassage and joint rehabilitation, and a 2014 commissioner's decree confirmed institutional accreditation. The complex is contracted to Italy's national health service, so a prescription from a family doctor covers one annual cycle of mud-balneotherapy or inhalation therapy against a ticket payment, and an in-house polyclinic offers ENT, orthopaedic, cardiology and dermatology consultations.
