Kaiafas Hot Springs Bath

The Kaiafas Thermal Springs lie in the southern part of the Regional Unit of Ilia in the western Peloponnese, on the shores of Lake Kaiafas within the municipality of Zacharo. The site sits about 27 km from Pyrgos and roughly 25 km from Ancient Olympia, cradled between a pine-forested mountainside and a golden sandy beach on the Ionian Sea. The lake, springs and surrounding wetland form part of a protected Natura 2000 area, giving the resort an unusually wild, natural setting where forest, lake and sea meet.

The thermal-mineral water and its source

The healing waters have been known since antiquity. They rise from two mythical caves at the foot of Mount Lapitha (Kaiafas hill): the larger cave of the Anigrides Nymphs and, some 200 metres to the south, the smaller Geranio Cave, also linked to the Atlantides Nymphs, whose spring was traditionally used for drinking cures. Ancient visitors attributed the waters' powers to the nymphs Pigaia, Iasis and Kalliafia, and the name Kaiafas is thought to derive from Kalliafia.

• The water is classified as hypothermal, hydrothionic (sulphurous, rich in free hydrogen sulphide), chlorinated-sodium and of near-neutral pH.
• Spring temperatures in the caves range from about 29 to 35 degrees Celsius, and the geothermal G3 Kaiafa borehole that feeds the centre emerges at around 31 degrees Celsius.
• Its mineral content includes sodium, chloride, sulphate, calcium, potassium, silica, strontium, fluoride and boron, together with free hydrogen sulphide and free carbonic acid.

Therapeutic uses

The springs are recommended for a wide range of conditions, including chronic rheumatic diseases, arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, myositis, disorders of the musculoskeletal system (lower-back complaints, sciatica/ischialgia and cervical syndrome), the chronic degenerative after-effects of injuries, neuralgia, as well as gynaecological and skin (dermatological) conditions.

Pools and baths

The Hydrotherapy Centre offers thermal bathing in several forms:

• An outdoor swimming pool filled with thermal spring water, used chiefly for kinesiotherapy (movement therapy in warm water).
• 13 private thermal bathtubs for individual balneotherapy sessions.
• A doctor's room, waiting area, sun loungers and on-site parking support the medical bathing programme.

Spa, wellness and treatments

Bathing follows a structured, doctor-supervised programme. Balneotherapy is taken in cycles of 12 to 20 days, with individual sessions lasting about 15 to 25 minutes. The centre also provides warm and very hot therapeutic showers, hydromassage sessions of around 20 minutes, and hydrokinetic therapy. A recently renovated spa adds further health and wellness services alongside the traditional cures.

Lakeside setting and activities

Beyond bathing, the resort makes the most of its lake and coast. Facilities for water sports operate on Lake Kaiafas and draw enthusiasts each season, while the long golden beach on the Ionian Sea allows guests to combine thermal cures with sea bathing.

Accommodation and family

The on-site Hotel Olympia stands on a small islet in the lake, linked to the shore by an 85-metre stone causeway and looking out over both the Great Lake and the Small Lake as well as the surrounding forest. It has 18 rooms (16 double and 2 single) sleeping up to 34 guests, with east- or west-facing balconies overlooking the lakes. Rooms offer air conditioning, private bathroom, refrigerator, television, hairdryer and non-smoking options, and the hotel is family- and child-friendly.

Season and visiting

The Hydrotherapy Centre operates seasonally, from June to October, seven days a week including Sundays and public holidays, roughly 09:00 to 17:00. Hotel Olympia runs from the start of July to 20 October. Thermal baths and the outdoor pool are charged per session, with reduced rates available.
