Ιαματικά Λουτρά Θερμοπυλών

The thermal springs of Thermopylae rise beside the historic battlefield and Leonidas monument, a short distance from the Athens-Lamia National Road and about 20 minutes from the city of Lamia. The site is open and accessible to everyone.

The hot springs and waterfall

The sulphur-rich thermal water emerges at a constant temperature of 40C at its natural spring point. Pipes were installed and minor human interventions were made to lift the water from the natural flow, creating a waterfall where visitors can bathe in the warm water in a naturalistic setting.

Therapeutic properties

The thermal water of Thermopylae is believed to have therapeutic properties, especially for:

• musculoskeletal disorders
• rheumatoid arthritis
• respiratory system issues

Historic setting

According to mythology the springs were created by Hephaestus, at the request of the goddess Athena, to heal the wounds of Hercules. The site is said to have served the ancient Spartan soldiers of King Leonidas, who used the baths to treat their injuries and rejuvenate their bodies.
