Healing mudbaths

The Krinides Mud-Therapy Centre (Πηλοθεραπευτήριο Κρηνίδων) is a public health facility operated by the Municipality of Kavala, set in the plain roughly 3 km from the village of Krinides in northern Greece. It draws on the area's natural springs and its deposits of therapeutic mud, offering seasonal mud baths and hydrotherapy in a simple, open-air bathing setting.

The therapeutic mud

Treatment centres on "mature" therapeutic mud. According to the centre, the action of the mud is dual: it exerts a local action on the surface of the skin and a general action on various bodily functions, thanks to substances that penetrate into the organism. The mud can be applied as a total-body immersion or as a partial, topical coating on the areas to be treated. The centre describes the mechanism of action as complex and multifaceted.

Medicinal water and hydrotherapy

Alongside the mud, the facility uses the area's medicinal spring water for hydrotherapy. The centre notes that hydrotherapy opens the pores and removes dead skin cells, giving a sense of physical relaxation and a pleasant sensation. The waters are presented as beneficial for a range of rheumatic and musculoskeletal complaints.

Season and setting

The centre operates on a summer season, from 17 June to 30 September, welcoming visitors for daytime mud baths and hydrotherapy. It lies about 17 km from Kavala, 19 km from Drama and 171 km from Thessaloniki, making it an easy day trip within the wider Krinides–Philippi area.
