About
Tengchong Rehai ("Sea of Heat") is a volcanic geothermal scenic area about 20 km southwest of Tengchong city in Yunnan, China. Rated a national 5A attraction, it sits in one of China's three major geothermal zones and spans roughly 9 square kilometres with more than 80 hot-spring and gas-spring groups, over ten of which exceed 90°C.
Volcanic geothermal water
The area is fed by high-temperature volcanic geothermal water. Its centrepiece, the octagonal Big Boiling Pot (大滞锅), is about 6.12 m across and 1.5 m deep, with a surface temperature of 96.6°C; one vent jets water some 30 cm above the surface at up to 102°C.
Hot-spring bathing pools
- Meinu Pool (美女池) – also called the "Immortal's Bathhouse," fed by naturally cooled mineral water at about 45°C.
- Bath Valley (浴谷) – a hillside spa complex of about 10,530 m² with 22 soaking pools, 8 private bathhouses and two natural geothermal steam areas.
Scenic geysers & resort
Beyond the Big Boiling Pot, visitors walk among fumaroles, boiling springs, fountains and hydrothermal features. The scenic area includes a hot-spring resort hotel, dining and thermal wellness programmes.
