Chinar Health Hotel

Chinar Health Hotel is a resort in the town of Naftalan, Azerbaijan, built around the region's signature therapy: baths in medicinal naphthalan crude oil. Naftalan is not a thermal-water spa — the healing agent is a rare, naturally occurring naphthenic petroleum found only around this town. For treatment the crude oil is warmed to roughly body temperature and used for full-immersion baths and local applications rather than as bathing water.

The naphthalan oil and its therapeutic use

Naftalan oil has been used medicinally for centuries and is credited with anti-inflammatory, analgesic and skin-regenerating effects. At Chinar it is prescribed under medical supervision for a broad range of conditions — musculoskeletal and joint disorders (arthritis, rheumatism), skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis, peripheral nervous-system and vascular problems, and gynaecological, urological and ENT complaints. After an oil bath the residual naphthalan is removed and guests rest, typically as part of a multi-day medical course.

Oil baths and treatments

Alongside the warmed naphthalan-oil baths, the medical spa offers iodine-bromine baths, paraffin therapy and a range of physiotherapy: laser therapy, magnetic and microwave therapy, shock-wave therapy, ultrasound, underwater massage and pressotherapy. Treatment packages begin with a physician's examination and laboratory tests before a personalised programme is set.
