About
Aquae Vivae is a thermal water park in Krapinske Toplice, in Croatian Zagorje about 45 to 50 kilometres from Zagreb, operated by the company Aquae Vivae d.d. Its water page describes the local supply as hyperthermal mineral springs with a water temperature of 41 °C, chemically characterised by calcium, magnesium and hydrocarbonate and with a neutral pH given as ranging between 7.3 and 7.7. The operator classifies the water as hyperthermal, notes that it rises from Lithothamnium limestone and belongs to the acratotherms, and gives the dissolved mineral content as 450 mg/l, with calcium at 52.4 mg/l, magnesium at 31.5 mg/l, hydrogen carbonate at 293.0 mg/l and sulphate at 39.7 mg/l. The physical-chemical analysis table published lower on the same page, credited to the Croatian Institute of Public Health, lists a temperature reading of 40 °C, so the prose figure of 41 and the tabulated figure of 40 do not agree; both are the operator's own publications. Water quality is stated to be under continuous supervision of the institute's department for health control of water.
The current park opened on 21 March 2015. The operator states it covers more than 18,000 square metres of indoor space and comprises five indoor pools (one of them a combined indoor-outdoor pool) and one outdoor pool, with total water surface over 1,500 square metres and a bather capacity of 1,200 people. All pools are said to be filled with natural spring thermal mineral water, at pool temperatures of 28 to 38 degrees. The published summary lists more than 160 water attractions including waterfalls, geysers, underwater side massages and massage loungers; an indoor slide with a 60-metre track; a diving pool 4.5 metres deep with professional equipment and diving instructors; a wave pool; a swimming pool; a children's pool; 600 loungers; the self-service restaurant Vivae seating 120; and a piano bar at reception. The wellness zone lists a Finnish sauna, a bio sauna, a steam bath, a new scrub bar, refreshment showers, heated resting benches and a table of drinks, teas and fruit; use of the scrub room is included in the wellness-zone ticket.
Bathing at Krapinske Toplice long predates the park. The operator's history page dates the first pool to 1658, a hollow in the ground fenced with oak logs; records the first reliable evidence of public use of the hot springs in 1703; and describes the modern resort built by Jakob Badl between 1859 and 1866, including the Marijina kupelj pool blessed and opened in May 1862. The first masonry outdoor pool followed in 1939, two outdoor pools existed by 1970 and four by the mid-1980s. The company itself is registered as founded in 1947.
Opening hours are published as 9:00 to 21:00 every day of the week, with shortened hours on StressFreeFriday programme days and specific closures announced on the site. The operator notes that it does not take reservations for ordinary days and that tickets are sold only at the water park reception.
