Balçova Termal
Balçova, İzmir, Türkiye
One of Turkey's largest thermal resorts, on İzmir's legendary Agamemnon springs, with eight thermal pools and a medical cure centre.
About
Balçova Termal is one of Turkey's largest thermal resorts, set in the Balçova district of İzmir on the celebrated Agamemnon Springs (Agamemnon Kaplıcaları). According to the resort, the site continues a therapeutic tradition stretching back some 2,500 years: legend holds that the Mycenaean commander Agamemnon sent his wounded warriors here to heal during the Trojan War, and over the centuries the springs drew Greeks, Romans and, from 1415, the Ottoman Turks who built a Turkish bath (hamam) on the site.
The thermal water
The resort's mineral-rich thermal water emerges at a temperature of roughly 34-39°C. The site publishes a detailed analysis of its three sources, showing a composition that is, in its words, rarely found among thermal springs. Notable minerals include:
- Sodium (Na+): 115-420 mg/L
- Bicarbonate (HCO3-): 353-695 mg/L
- Chloride (Cl-): 64.9-231 mg/L
- Calcium (Ca++): 16.1-72.7 mg/L
- Magnesium (Mg++): 1.36-20.1 mg/L
- Sulfate (SO4-): 95.5-180 mg/L
- Plus potassium, silica, boron and lithium
Thermal pools & baths
The Balçova Thermal Spa & Cure Center offers eight thermal pools of varying sizes and temperatures, including two pools reserved exclusively for women, which form the core of its balneotherapy programme. The complex also provides 37 thermal bathing rooms fed with thermal water, a sauna and a Turkish-style steam room (hamam).
Spa, wellness & physiotherapy
Described by the resort as Turkey's leading comprehensive health-tourism facility of its kind, the cure centre combines modern medicine with the natural thermal resource. It houses specialised departments for physical therapy, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, diagnostics, individual therapy, exercise and even a dental clinic. Treatments target rheumatic and degenerative conditions (rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis), disc herniation, sports injuries, and orthopaedic and neurological rehabilitation (fractures, stroke, MS, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's). The resort reports a 90-95% treatment success rate and, under an agreement with Norway's Ministry of Health, treats roughly 950-1,000 rheumatism patients each year. The separate FUGA Fitness & Spa Center blends traditional Turkish hamam culture with Far Eastern massage therapies, alongside a fitness centre and spa and massage services.
Hotel & family
The Balçova Termal Otel offers Standard, Suite and Accessible rooms equipped with air conditioning, LCD television, minibar, safe and telephone. Children aged 0-6 stay free and ages 7-12 receive a 50% discount when sharing with parents; note that children under 12 are not permitted in the thermal pools.
Dining
Several venues serve guests: the Agamemnon À La Carte Restaurant (regional and world cuisine with live music), the open-air Garden Restaurant (Mediterranean and Aegean dishes), Meryemana Restaurant (breakfast and dinner buffet), the Alaçatı Cafe & Bar, and the Aktar Cafe specialising in herbal teas.
Setting
Beyond the water, the resort grounds include the Balçova Therapy Forest and the Balçova Tennis Club, set in the green hills of Balçova just southwest of central İzmir.
