Vök Böð

Vök Baths (Vök Böð) is a geothermal spa on the shore of Urriðavatn lake, a short drive from Egilsstaðir in East Iceland. The site takes its name from the ice-free patches (vök) that historically appeared on the frozen lake in winter, revealing the presence of natural hot water beneath the surface. Today that geothermal water feeds a cluster of pools built right into the lake, giving bathers a lakeside setting with wide open views across the water and surrounding hills.

Geothermal water

The bathing water is drawn from geothermal boreholes and is used in its natural state, with no chemicals added. Because the source water is clean enough to bathe in untreated, Vök Baths markets itself around the purity of its geothermal water. The water is cooled to comfortable bathing temperatures before reaching the pools.

Floating lake infinity pools

The signature feature is a pair of floating geothermal pools set directly into Urriðavatn lake, with infinity edges that blend into the surface of the water. Bathers soak in warm geothermal water while surrounded by the cold lake, taking in the East Iceland landscape.
