Sulphur thermal water: why it smells, what it comes with, and the 86 European baths built on it

You smell a sulphur bath before you see it. That is not a figure of speech: the human nose detects hydrogen sulphide at a few parts per billion, which is thousands of times below the concentration at which it does anything at all. A water that smells strongly of sulphur may contain a vanishingly small amount of it. A water that smells of nothing may contain a great deal, in a form that has no odour.

That gap between what you notice and what is measured is the reason this article exists. We counted every bath in the catalogue whose operator names sulphur among the dominant constituents of the water, then looked at what else those analyses say.

What "sulphur water" actually means

Sulphur reaches groundwater in two families of compound, and they behave nothing alike. Sulphates — sulphur bound to oxygen — are odourless, chemically stable, and common in ordinary mineral water. Sulphides, chiefly hydrogen sulphide, are the ones you smell: volatile, unstable in air, and gone from an open pool within hours of the water arriving.

Our field records that the operator names sulphur among the dominant constituents. It does not distinguish the two, because most published analyses do not present them in a way that can be compared across countries. So read the count below as "sulphur appears in the analysis", not as "this water smells". The bath's own analysis, if it publishes one in full, will tell you which family dominates — and if it says sulphate, the famous smell may be entirely absent.

Thirty-four of the 86 hold an official medicinal-water certification from a national authority — the Hungarian gyógyvíz, the German Heilwasser or their equivalents. That is a legal status about composition, granted after testing, and not something an operator may award itself.

Sulphur rarely travels alone

In 37 of the 86 baths, sulphur is the only constituent the operator names. In the other 49 it arrives in company, and the company tells you something about the rock the water passed through.

Only 13 of the 86 publish a total mineralisation figure, and among those the range is wide enough to make the word "sulphur water" almost useless as a description on its own: Termálne kúpalisko Sliač in Slovakia publishes 614 mg per litre, and Fackelmann-Therme at Hersbruck publishes 14,200 — a brine, twenty-three times more concentrated, and both of them sulphur waters.

Hot at the spring, temperate in the pool

Forty-three of the 86 publish a pool temperature. The median is 36 °C and the range runs from 23 °C to 45 °C. Thirty-two publish a spring temperature as well, with a median of 38 °C and a maximum of 74 °C — so a good number of these baths are cooling their water substantially before anyone gets in.

The gap between the two figures is often the whole story of the building. Bentheimer Mineraltherme in Lower Saxony takes water at 60 °C and holds its pools between 29 and 32 °C. Termálne kúpalisko Vrbov in Slovakia draws 59 °C from 2,502 m and runs pools from 26 to 38 °C, so a visitor can choose their temperature within one water. Les Bains de Lavey in Switzerland brings up 67 °C from 1,600 m and still keeps a 45 °C pool at the top of its range.

At the other end are the sulphur baths nobody expects: Terme di Cretone in Italy at 23 °C, Freibad Bad Füssing at 24 °C from a well 2,600 m deep, and Budapest's Dagály at 27 °C. And a handful need no adjustment at all — Les Thermes de Lectoure in Gascony arrives at 42 °C and is used at 42 °C.

Sulphur water has a long folk association with skin, and it is worth saying that our data does not show it. Among these 86 baths the ratio of musculoskeletal to skin claims is 1.25 to 1 — and across the whole catalogue, sulphur or not, it is also 1.25 to 1. Skin claims are common everywhere, not especially here. If sulphur is distinctive in what operators say about it, that distinctiveness is not visible in these counts.

Planning a visit around the smell

  1. Expect it strongest indoors and at the inlet. Hydrogen sulphide leaves open water quickly, so an outdoor pool at the far end of its circuit smells far less than the jet feeding it.
  2. Do not read intensity as strength. A faint smell is compatible with a heavily mineralised water, and a strong one with a weak solution.
  3. Leave silver at home. Sulphide tarnishes silver quickly and the marks are a nuisance to remove. Most operators say so somewhere; not all of them say it prominently.
  4. Assume your swimwear will hold the smell. Light-coloured synthetics keep it longest, and a rinse in plain water afterwards does more than any amount of scrubbing later.
  5. If the smell is what you came for, ask where the water enters. That is the one part of the answer an operator will always know.

What this article does not tell you

Whether sulphur water does anything for the complaints these 86 operators list. That is a medical question, we have examined nobody, and a count of baths is not evidence about a body. Balneotherapy has a real research literature and a genuinely contested one.

What we can tell you is which baths name sulphur, which hold a certificate that an authority issued, what else is in the analysis, how hot the water arrives and how cool it is by the time you are standing in it. On the question of the smell, chemistry is on firmer ground than either marketing or scepticism: your nose is an extremely sensitive instrument being asked a question it cannot answer.
